Todays big hype are Biofuel cars. The car of the future that will save the world by eliminating greenhouse gases. Well it is not true, thanks to Paul Crutzen, a nobel Laureate, has found that biofuels release Nitrous Oxide (N2O). Nitrous Oxide is actually more dangerous than the greenhouse gasses that biofuels eliminate. But Crutzen also states that crops with less nitrogen demand, such as grasses and woody coppicing release a lot less Nitrous Oxide than other crops. But the thing is that even with these crops such as grasses and what not, they still release some greenhouse gasses. And we need to just stop releasing ANY greenhouse gasses. And the Second reason Biofuels are not the answer is mainly because it is doing the exact opposite that it is supposed to do. Because of the growing demand for biofuels there is a need to make more farms, and farms take a space. In Brazil they have eliminated their gasoline addiction but now with biofuels they are helping eliminate the Amazon forest. The high demand on biofuels is actually contributing to deforestation. Deforestation actually allows for more greenhouse gases to exist in the air because forests breath in carbon dioxide and release clean oxygen. So the deforestation to grow biofuels is not helping global warming at all. Also with this high demand on biofuels farmers are starting to grow these crops for use in biofuels not food. Therefor there are less farmers growing crops for food making food more expensive. This is just going to make it harder for poor countries that are starving to get food. This is why biofuels are not the answer in my opinion.
