Apple Recalls iPhone 3G Compact Power Adapter

New safe adapter has a green dot

Safe adapter has a green dot.

Today Apple reported that they will be recalling the sexy Compact Power Adapters they shipped out with every iPhone. They found out that the prongs on the adapter could break off and get stuck in the socket giving a risk of electric shock. All of the iPhones released in USA, Japan, Canada, Mexico, and several South American countries(listed here) came with this recalled adapter. You can tell whether you have the recalled version or not by looking to see if it has a green dot on it (pictured to the right). If your adapter does have this green dot then that means you have the newer safe adapter. Now for everyone who has the recalled adapter will need to exchange it for a newer one. Rest assured the exchange process is easy, you will need to either go to your nearest Apple Retail Store or fill out Apple’s online form. If you order the new adapter online they will ship within three weeks of your order starting on October 10th. Now if you plan on going to an Apple Retail Store you will need to bring your iPhone 3G and the recalled adapter with you to receive a new one. Either way you choose to get the new one you will not have to pay for the exchange. The adapters will be available in Apple stores on October 10th. Apple says not to use the adapter until you exchange it for the new one.

Users with ultracompact power adapters should immediately stop using them until they exchange them for a new, redesigned ultracompact adapter.

In the meantime, they should charge their iPhone 3G by connecting it to their computer with the USB cable that came with their iPhone or by using a standard-sized Apple USB Power Adapter (with fold up prongs) or with a third party adapter designed to work with the iPhone, such as a car charger.
